Track Record: Chourio excited scouts with his quick-twitch athleticism during the tryout process in Venezuela. A shortstop and center fielder at the time, Chourio had a wiry build and the potential for an enticing power/speed combination as a 16-year-old that prompted the Brewers to make him the centerpiece of their international class when the signing period opened on Jan. 15, 2021, giving him a $1.8 million bonus. Less than two years later, Chourio catapulted himself into the discussion as the best prospect in baseball. He jumped to Low-A Carolina in 2022 as an 18-year-old and continued to hit well in High-A Wisconsin before a late-season bump to Double-A Biloxi. After an uneven first half back in Biloxi to open 2023, his performance skyrocketed in the second half. After the season, Chourio signed an eight-year, $82 million contract with club options for two more seasons.
Scouting Report: Hitters in the Double-A Southern League were at a disadvantage in the first half, when MLB experimented with a pre-tacked ball that led to more extreme pitch movements and higher whiff rates. Through July 6, Chourio hit .239/.304/.410 with 11 home runs in 71 games with a 7% walk rate and 21% strikeout rate. After that--when the Southern League reverted to the traditional baseball--Chourio hit .323/.380/.544 in 51 games with 11 home runs, an 8% walk rate and a 14% strikeout rate before a mid-September promotion to Triple-A nashville. How much of those splits were because of the baseball itself or a 19-year-old making adjustments and getting more comfortable during the season was a wide topic of discussion inside and outside the organization. What’s clear is that Chourio is an electric talent with standout tools and skills at a premium position. His explosiveness is evident in his bat speed, which helps him drive the ball out to any part of the park. He has plus-plus raw power and is content letting the ball travel deep and hammering the ball to right-center field, with more than half of his home runs going to center or right field. Chourio is a good hitter who doesn’t swing and miss much at pitches in the strike zone, though he will need to tighten up his plate discipline. He’s not a free-swinger, and he did chase less as the season progressed, but continued improvement with his swing decisions will be critical for him to achieve his potential. A plus-plus runner, Chourio has the speed, acceleration and lateral range to be an above-average defender in center field. He’s still learning to finish plays at the wall consistently, but his reads and routes have all improved since getting more full-time reps in center field. Chourio had an issue with his right elbow as an amateur and has a fringe-average arm that is his lightest tool.
The Future: Chourio has a chance to be a franchise cornerstone, a potential perennial all-star with 30-30 potential who could hit in the middle of the Brewers’ lineup. Given Milwaukee’s outfield situation, the organization can be patient with Chourio, but he’s now squarely in position to make the team’s Opening Day roster. N

Track Record: Chourio was one of the elite international prospects for his year when the Brewers made him the centerpiece of their class, signing him out of Venezuela for $1.8 million on Jan. 15, 2021. He put together a solid pro debut in the Dominican Summer League in 2021 before skyrocketing through the system in 2022. After starting the season in extended spring training, Chourio joined Low-A Carolina in May and crushed the level. He drew a promotion to High-A Wisconsin at the end of July before reaching Double-A Biloxi in September as an 18-year-old. He then played winter ball in the Venezuelan League. His younger brother Jaison is a promising outfield prospect in the Guardians' system who spent 2022 in the Dominican Summer League.
Scouting Report: Chourio has a dazzling array of tools and skills as a power-speed threat at a premium position. He's an explosive player whose quick-twitch athleticism is evident at the plate and in the field. Chourio snaps the barrel through the zone with outstanding bat speed, enabling him to drive the ball with impact to all fields. For a teenager who still has considerable strength gains to realize on his lean, athletic frame, the ball flies off his bat with surprising carry, especially to right-center field. He's flashing plus raw power now with a chance to hit 30-plus home runs in a season. Chourio is an advanced pure hitter for his age, too. He manipulates the bat head well, enabling him to consistently find the sweet spot, square up different types of pitches and smoke balls the opposite way. His strike-zone judgment is solid for his age, particularly given the caliber of pitching he faced in 2022 as an 18-year-old, though he will need to tighten up some of the chase tendencies he showed. Chourio is a plus-plus runner who goes home to first in 4.1 seconds, and his body type suggests he should be able to hold that speed into his prime years. As an amateur, Chourio split time between shortstop and center field, with a lot of time at shortstop. He had an issue with his right elbow, though, and that played into the Brewers' decision to move him to center field during his pro debut in 2021, with a handful of games at second base. He's a full-time center fielder now who looks natural at the position. He plays shallow at times and goes back well on balls. He takes good routes in every direction, drawing projections to be an average to plus defender. Chourio at his best will flash an average arm, though given the history with his elbow, the Brewers have cautioned him to be judicious with his throws and just hit the cutoff man, so it often plays below an average arm in games.
The Future: Chourio looks like a franchise cornerstone with a chance to be Milwaukee's version of Ronald Acuña Jr. Even a conservative timetable would put him in the big leagues when he's 20 in 2024, and he could get there as a 19-year-old in 2023.

Track Record: Chourio was the top prospect the Brewers signed in their 2020-21 international class when the signing period opened. He got off to a slow start in his pro debut in the Dominican Summer League as a 17-year-old, but he finished on a tear and put together quality at-bats even when his numbers were down early in the year.
Scouting Report: Chourio is an explosive, quick-burst athlete. That explosiveness is evident in his fast, whippy bat speed, which helps the ball jump off his bat more than expected for a hitter with such a wiry frame. His five home runs were the most among either of Milwaukee’s two DSL clubs, and he has physical projection remaining to grow into plus power. More than just a slugger, Chourio stands out for his ability to recognize pitches, manage at-bats and make frequent contact for his age. He has a chance to be an average hitter as he continues to mature and develop. Chourio signed as a shortstop, but his fringy arm strength doesn’t fit at the position and he is more comfortable in center field, where he played nearly all of his games in his pro debut. He’s a plus runner who glides around well in the outfield and has the attributes to develop into an above-average defender.
The Future: Chourio is still several years away, but he has a chance to be a power-speed threat in the middle of the field. He will make his United States debut in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League in 2022.

TRACK RECORD: Outfielder Hedbert Perez led a Venezuelan-heavy international class for the Brewers in 2019. In their next class—moved from July, 2, 2020 to start on Jan. 15, 2021—the Brewers again were strongly focused on Venezuelan prospects, led by the signing of Chourio.
SCOUTING REPORT: Chourio has a lean, athletic frame with exciting tools now and physical projection for them to get better with strength gains. He has a quick-twitch explosion that shows up in his bat speed, helping him drive the ball with surprising carry off his bat for a wiry teenager, especially to the opposite field. He drives the ball with impact already and could grow into plus power, with a mature approach for his age with his ability to recognize offspeed, use the whole field and make consistent contact in games. He's at least a plus runner now, making him a potential power/speed threat in the middle of the diamond. Chourio has seen time at shortstop and center field, with the Brewers planning to develop him as a shortstop. His offensive game is ahead of his defense, so he could still end up in center field.
THE FUTURE: Chourio isn’t as advanced as Perez was at the same stage, but his tools already make him one of the Brewers’ most promising prospects at the lower levels. He will make his pro debut in 2021.

August Update: Chourio's stock continues to skyrocket. The same age as the 2022 high school draft picks, Chourio received a promotion to High-A Wisconsin at the end of July and hasn't slowed down. He's one of the game's elite prospects, with a chance to become the No. 1 overall prospect in the game before he reaches the big leagues, which if he stays healthy could come by the time he's still 20.
Midseason Update: Chourio's stock continues to skyrocket as the 18-year-old consistently impresses evaluators with his athleticism, tools, ability to play a premium position and high-level performance in Low-A as an 18-year-old. While teams around the league have taken notice of Chourio's ability and are starting to pitch him backwards more often, Chourio has adjusted accordingly. The upside is there to be a top 10 overall prospect in baseball, with an exciting mix of potential plus power, plus-plus speed and plus defense in the middle of the field.

The Brewers went heavy on Venezuelan prospects in their 2019 international class, led by two of the top outfielders last year in Hedbert Perez and Luis Medina. Their top signings this year are again likely to be Venezuelan prospects, led by Chourio, who has split time between shortstop and center field. A quick-twitch athlete with plus speed, Chourio has a skinny frame but drives the ball with surprising impact, generating lift and backspin with his swing to profile as a potential power/speed threat in the middle of the diamond. Chourio is represented by Cesar Suarez. -
